THE LIESBEEK AS A RIVER STUDY

  • Grade: 5, 6, 12
  • 3 hours

SAVE OUR RIVERS

We meet outside the entrance to Kirstenbosch Gardens and then proceed to two sites on the Liesbeek River: one natural (where practical activities are done) and one canalised, for comparison. The Liesbeek is one of only a few accessible rivers in an urban area. We focus on the impact of human development and invader plants on the River and its biodiversity.
A scientific audit of the River is done. This lesson is ideally suited as field work. The lesson is only available in Terms 2 & 4, and schools must have transport to both sites.
