World Wetlands Day

Our lesson Wonderful Wetlands (Gr 5-6; 7; see p. 8) is ideal for the first term. Come and learn about the important role that wetlands play, how they are threatened by climate change, and what we can do to protect and SAVE them. The theme for 2019 is Wetlands and Climate Change.

Our programme: Term 1

National Water Week

Our special lesson, Water Awareness, focuses on the current water
situation where water is a scarce resource that we must use sparingly and sustainably.

Earth Hour

We encourage schools to promote this in their communities:
switch off all lights between 20:30 and 21:30.

International Museum Week

International Museum Day is celebrated all over the world with the aim of promoting museums, their collections and programmes.
The Education Museum always runs special programmes for schools and is open free of charge to the public.

National Arbor Week

International Coastal Clean-up

An opportunity for learners to get practically involved in cleaning the environment. The data of the debris collected is sent to scientists to analyse;
the learners thus add to the scientific knowledge and become citizen scientists. Schools can get data cards, plastic gloves & refuse bags from us.

Schools Heritage Celebration

Just before Heritage Day, we celebrate the educational contribution of schools in a different geographical area. This is part of our Every School Counts programme.

National Marine Week

Our lesson Rocky Seashore Study is about the biodiversity and survival of
rock-pool dwellers at Dalebrook Beach, Kalk Bay, with a different
focus for each grade.

The LIMPET Programme

LIMPET is a citizen science programme for Gr 10 & 11, whereby learners collect, process and monitor data from a field study at the tidal rock pools. The aim is to build knowledge and values that inspire them to care for a healthy ocean environment.

(Long-term Intertidal Monitoring through Participation, Evaluation & Training)

Every School Counts Ongoing

We feel that every school is important, and that every school’s history and heritage are important. This project has the following components:

  • We collect the histories of individual schools in our Reference Library
  • We have historical information and photographs of many schools in the Western Cape in an electronic database
  • We do as much research on schools’ histories as we can ourselves for that database
  • We encourage schools to write up their histories
  • We encourage schools to start their own museums
  • We are a member of the Forum for School Museums and Archives

Blue Plaque Schools Project

Blue Plaques are seen as heritage markers all over the world.
They indicate that a site has some heritage significance for the community. Schools within the greater Cape Town and the four Metropole Districts
area are invited to apply in one of the following categories:

  • The age of the school (must be over 150 years old)
  • An architecturally significant building
  • Exceptional contribution to the community
  • Survival under difficult circumstances
