This lesson takes place in the Arderne Gardens in Claremont. It is done in Term 3 and 4, as it links with ‘Special Days: National Arbor Week’ (1–7 Sept). The lesson is weather dependent. The Arderne Gardens is a Provincial Heritage Site, where a variety of plants and trees have been planted for the enjoyment of the public and for learning. We begin with the rules for visitors and introduce the history of the Gardens. Then we take a walk through the Gardens, focusing on identifying specific trees. Learners participate in a variety of activities to identify and classify the diverse species. Lastly, we talk about Arbor Week, the uses of trees and why we should plant more.
